Small enough to know you. Large enough to serve all your grocery needs.
In 1951 Ocal Gerwig took his love of farming to the Ashland community. With the support of his wife Mary and his six children, he turned the family barn into a flourishing grocery business. He concentrated on buying pork and beef from local farmers and raising his own livestock and vegetables. The business was known as O.O. Gerwig and Sons.
In 1963 Ocal was tragically killed when a freight train struck the vehicle. With a heavy heart and her husband’s memory, Mary continued Ocal’s entrepreneurial dream and grew the business. Still raising their own crops in the summer and buying from local farmers, the business soon outgrew the family barn. The signature “white barn” was born in 1969. Mary, along with help from her family, built a new building. Because of customers referring to the store as “the white barn,” Mary structured the building on the same look.
Today the business is owned by Dennis Gerwig II, the third generation of the Gerwig family group of owners.
